Method 1: Reset the FSRM Service

Resetting FSRM means to merely reset the File System Resource Manager (FSRM), using the command prompt. To do so, follow the steps as mentioned below:
  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. And then type “cmd” in the search panel and hit the Enter.
  3. Right-click on “cmd” in the Search results.
  4. Then choose the “Run as administrator” option.
  5. Now, type “fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\” in the black command prompt window and hit the Enter.
  6. After the command runs successfully, you need to restart your system and then try rerunning the Windows update.
  7. If you find the same error again, you should then move on to the next solution as mentioned below.

Method 2: Delete Common Log File System (CLFS) transaction logs

When the Common Log File System (CLFS) transaction logs are corrupted, they can be a big reason behind causing this Windows Update Error. Thus, you can simply delete these corrupt logs, and the Window will recreate a fresh copy of them. To do so, follow the steps given below:
  1. Type “cmd” in the search panel and hit the Enter.
  2. Right-click on “cmd” in the Search results.
  3. Then choose the “Run as administrator” option.
  4. In the black command prompt window, you need to type the following commands properly:
  • cd /d %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine
  • attrib -s -h *
  • del *.blf
  • del *.regtrans-ms
  1. Make sure you press Enter after typing each command.
Note: If you receive an error that says something as “these files are in use,” you then need to restart your system try the same process once again.

Method 3: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Running the Windows Update Troubleshooter can also fix the error. To run it, follow these steps:
  1. Firstly, tap on the Start button.
  2. Then tap the gear-like symbol to open the Settings page.
  3. Here you need to tap on the Updates and Security option.
  4. And go to Troubleshoot.
  5. Then select the “Windows Update Troubleshooter” option and run it. Check if this helps.

Method 4: Rename Corrupt Update Stores

It has been noticed that sometimes previously failed updates triggered this error. So without taking anything for granted, It would be better to rename the previous or old stores, so that your Windows can re-attempt updates in a new/clean folder. In order to do this, see these steps:

  • ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
  • Make sure that you press Enter after typing each command.

Method 5: Disable the AntiVirus Software Temporarily

The AntiVirus software installed on your device is also likely to be interfering with the Windows Update process. Thus, in order to resolve this error, you can temporarily disable the AntiVirus software and check if it works.

Method 6: Restart the Windows Update Services

Restarting the Windows Update Services can also fix the Error 0x80071a91.  Follow these steps to restart the Windows Update Services:
  1. Launch the Service Manager and make sure that they are started.
  2. Also, you have to ensure that their Startup type is as follows:
  • Cryptographic Service – Automatic
  • Background Intelligent Transfer Service – Manual
  • Windows Update Service – Manual (Triggered)
